The grilled cheese sandwich is a classic tradition enjoyed by all, young and old. There are many ways to make a grilled cheese sandwich, but here is a simple and traditional recipe for creating a quick, old fashioned grilled cheese sandwich.
Step 1 – Gather the Ingredients
To make this grilled cheese sandwich you will need a few items and ingredients. For the sandwich itself, grab two slices of white bread. White bread is the most traditional but wheat or rye are acceptable depending on your personal preference. This recipe calls for three slices of american cheese. Again, other types of cheeses will work, but the white bread/american cheese combination is just so classically delicious. To cook the sandwich you will need a skillet and butter or margarine. A spatula for handling the sandwich is easier than using your hands or flipping the sandwich in the air.
Step 2 – Assemble the Sandwich
Assemble the sandwich in the following order:
Bread Slice, 2 slices of cheese, a third slice split in half, and the second slice of bread.
The third slice of cheese should be split in half to give the bread and the cheese more opportunity to melt together.
Step 3A -Prepare the Skillet
Place a considerable pat of butter in the skillet. Turn up the flame to medium. Allow the butter to melt. While it is melting, spin the skillet in circles, coating the entire surface with the butter.
Step 3B -Prepare the Wood Pellet Grill
Instead of using a skillet, fire up your personal Traeger grilling machine. Choose the right pellet for that extra flavor.
Wrap the cheese sandwich with aluminum foil. Place it on the grill!
Step 4 -Butter the Bread
Once the butter has melted, bring the sandwich over to the skillet. Grab the top slice and place it on the skillet for a few seconds. Remove it, check to make sure it is sufficiently buttered, and then place the whole sandwich on the skillet with the unbuttered side face down. Keep the heat on medium.
Note: If you opt for grilling the cheese sandwich over a Traeger, make sure to add the butter before wrapping the sandwich in aluminum foil.
Step 5 – Watch and Manage
If you wish for the cheese to really melt, grab a pot lid or other cover to retain the heat in the skillet. Keep light pressure on the sandwich with the spatula. You may check on the sandwich by flipping it with the spatula. If the bread is nice and brown, that side is done. Repeat on the other side until both sides are browned as desired and the cheese has melted.
Step 6 – Eat and Enjoy!
Remove the sandwich, turn off the stove and serve up your delicious grilled cheese sandwich. Grab your beverage and snacks of choice and enjoy!
